Issue 196 of The Gooner from May 2009 celebrates the 20th anniversary of Anfield 89... well, there isn’t much else to celebrate is there? The issue went to press before the humiliating defeats against Man United and Chelsea so it’s not as downbeat as it would have been had it come out two weeks later. Simon Rose recalls the 88/89 season and in particular the impossibly dramatic climax, whilst Mark Halfpenny remembers that it’s also 20 years since the Hillsborough disaster. Elsewhere in the issue, there’s an article which draws parallels between the rise of punk rock in the 70s and the growing support for grass roots football today – not an obvious connection perhaps, but one which makes a lot of sense – and we also talk to some members of the Macedonian Supporters Club. And then there’s all the regulars - Highbury Spy, Mickey Cannon, North Bank Times, Dwight Hart-Lane, readers letters, Anger Management, match reports and another undercover mission to the Away End to see what Liverpool fans thought of the crazy 4-4 game at Anfield.
