The Gooner issue 281 ends an eventful but disappointing 2019 by welcoming new manager Mikel Arteta to the club in the ‘Talking Reds’ editorial and a piece on the type of bosses that Arsenal looked at in making their decision on who would succeed Unai Emery. There are a couple of articles on the noisy neighbours, with a visit to the Lane aka the Swamp for the recent womens’ match, and thoughts on Jose Mourinho becoming their manager. There is a piece reflecting on how fruitful last summer’s transfer window has been, as well as thoughts on Unai Emery’s 18 months at the club. Another article makes the case for Freddie Ljungberg to remain at the club. Gabriel Martinelli comes under the spotlight, and another piece ponders how things have gone so wrong for deposed captain Granit Xhaka. There is also the second of a regular column from former legendary right back Lee Dixon. Talking Point pieces abound, each one discussing a particular issue from a recent Arsenal match, and there is a trip report from the recent match against Standard Liege in Belgium. Of course, we love our nostalgia, and the second of a series which takes a look at how Arsenal’s identity emerged focuses on Arsenal v Ajax in the 1970 Fairs Cup. On a European theme, Alan ‘Smudger’ Smith recalls the run to the final of the 1994 European Cup Winners’ Cup trophy, whilst the 1983 FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Leeds United is remembered with the two clubs about to meet in the competition once again. Our series on matches that did not work out well for Arsenal continues, although more enjoyable reading sees the club’s best centre backs of the last 40 years selected in another ongoing series. Add this to all our usual regulars - The Spy, Mickey Cannon, Well Played, Inbox, an update on our YouTube channel and the ‘Up the Arse!’ humour section and throw in the bonus of our 2020 Gooner calendar, featuring the history of Arsenal’s club crest. That gives you a 68 page edition packed with reading.
